City & Islington College Blog
If you want to study at one of the country’s most successful colleges, our website is a good place to start. I hope that you’ll become one of our many student success stories, on track to get great results.

Our excellent achievement rates were one of the main reasons for our outstanding Ofsted inspection in 2008. Since then we have been awarded Beacon status in recognition of the high quality of our teaching and learning.

How have we become so successful? Firstly, because we value our students – the range of backgrounds, experiences, energy and enthusiasm that students of all ages bring to the College. We celebrate their success, set challenging targets and provide excellent support.

And we believe in the importance of the environment – that’s why we’ve invested £64 million – more than any other college in the UK – in developing our new Centres; great places to study equipped with leading edge technology.

But most of all, we ensure that you will get the best opportunities to learn, with courses that are well organised and designed to be fun as well as demanding, and teachers who are second to none.

I often visit our Centres and always value finding out how our students are getting on. I hope to meet many of you in your time with us.

Eton College Blog
Most of Eton’s 1300 students enter the school at age 13. An old system under which boys could be registered at birth with a future house master was abolished some years ago, and virtually all candidates now go through a pre-assessment at age 11 (during year 6 in UK educational terms). The assessment consists of an interview, a reasoning test and a report from the boy’s current school. Those offered conditional places must then pass the qualifying examination (Common Entrance) at age 13 to secure their place, or do at least reasonably well in the more challenging King’s Scholarship examination.

We are usually able to offer conditional places to about one third of the candidates at age 11. Others are placed on a waiting list to replace any who may withdraw later.

In order to take the assessment boys must be registered by the age of 10 years 6 months at the latest. This is a firm deadline. Click here to request a registration form.

Introductory tours can be arranged through the Admissions Office. This is best done when a boy is aged 10.

Boys are placed in houses by mutual agreement between families and house masters, after a series of meetings following the award of a conditional place. A contract is then signed with the school, and an entry fee (currently £1500) is paid to secure the place. £1050 of that deposit is returned when the boy leaves the school at age 18 with all fees settled.

A small number of boys who have not secured conditional places may enter at age 13 by winning a King’s Scholarship or Music Scholarship. Both scholarships are highly competitive.

Entry at age 16 : we have a Sixth Form Scholarship scheme for boys at UK schools, and in some years we can also take a small number of fee-paying Sixth Form Entrants.

The entry system is managed by the tutor for admissions on the Head Master’s behalf. The Head Master reserves the right to refuse to admit any boy.

It is essential that the Admissions Office is kept up to date with any change of address, guardianship or preparatory school. Eton cannot accept responsibility for correspondence which goes astray.

The University of Greenwich Blog
Why choose us? The University of Greenwich offers the best of both worlds, city and country. As a student you are on the doorstep of London, but with the cream of Kent - rolling hills, pub-to-pub walks, seaside resorts and historic sites - not far away.

Education is about breadth as well as depth. It is about places and people, sights and heritage as well as books and keyboards. So let us tell you a little about how we were born and how we have grown.

More than a century of service The university traces its roots to 1890, when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. An innovator from the start, the polytechnic pioneered the country’s first part-time day-release and sandwich courses. Over the years a range of specialist organisations have joined the institution, giving it diverse strengths in subjects such as teacher training, architecture, engineering and history. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970. We became the University of Greenwich when we were awarded university status in 1992.

Where are we? The university has three campuses: Avery Hill, in the south-east London district of Eltham; Greenwich, in the historic London borough; and Medway, which is in Chatham Maritime, Kent.

Diversity and distinction The university is proud of its diverse student body. People from more than 100 countries choose to study at Greenwich, part of an international student community of 4,000. Services for students with disabilities or who have dyslexia give support to more than 1,000. Many of our black and other ethnic-minority students participate in a mentoring scheme which pairs them with highfliers in the City and elsewhere. Students benefit from a research environment where staff share their expertise and specialist facilities. At Greenwich we set high standards for teaching quality and provide professional training opportunities for all lecturers. We also measure students’ views on our services through our annual student satisfaction survey, and if shortcomings are found we address them.

Arts and culture Each year the university offers its most distinguished buildings as part of the London Open House architectural festival, an event enabling the public to appreciate some of the capital’s architectural gems.

The university also takes part in the annual Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, a celebration of music, theatre, dance and other performing arts in and around the borough. Our ongoing support of Black History Month has brought a range of special events to the Greenwich Campus, including talks, presentations and exhibitions.

Also on the Greenwich Campus, the Stephen Lawrence Gallery showcases the work of artists from all backgrounds. Recent exhibitions include Trace, a work examining the processes of memory, and Candy Pop and Juicy Lucy, staged within an ice cream van, and inspired by the artist's childhood memories of her father's job selling ice creams.

Students and staff have the opportunity to engage with the arts by performing with the university band, which plays music from the Swing era, and with the university choir.

We have also completed a £60m investment in our two main campuses in Luton and Bedford, and were delighted when His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, opened the new facilities at our Bedford campus. These include a £6m Campus Centre that houses a £4.5m 280-seat theatre, and an £8m Physical Education and Sport Science Centre that is set to train athletes in the 2012 Olympics. See our Bedford campus launch brochure for further details.

Our Luton campus has also seen massive investment with the introduction of a multi-million pound Media Arts Centre, a £7.8m Learning Resources Centre and £1.2 million innovative 'Business Pods' which have been commended in a recent Government Green Paper as an example of 'best practice'.

The University is now embarking on an additional £74m redevelopment project to enhance our Luton campus further by 2011, which will introduce brand new £40m en-suite Halls of Residence that will be located on campus, as well as a £34m Campus Centre ready for use in September 2010.

In the recent UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise, much of our research was described as world leading. As a consequence, our Government funding has more than doubled. We have been awarded a £1.1m grant to set up a major centre for social work research, the Goldberg Centre.

The University continues to value diversity and takes pride in its student-centred learning experience. We stand for high-quality teaching, outstanding student support and excellent personal, career and professional development.

We work closely with employers on our curriculum whilst forging close links with UK companies to provide a broad range of training and industry accredited courses.

Research is responsible for much of our collaborative work with business, industry and the public sector, providing opportunities for work experience, and demonstrate our commitment to producing professionally-minded graduates that employers want to recruit.

A Campus for the 21st Century
Brunel is a campus-based university, and students on site are never more than 10 minutes away from halls of residence, catering, social and sports facilities, lecture theatres, the Library, the Computer Centre or welfare services. We have invested £300 million redeveloping the campus in the last few years, with many new and refurbished social, teaching and sporting facilities, and more green spaces outside.

King’s College London is one of England’s oldest and most prestigious university institutions: a multi-faculty research-led university college based in the heart of London with over 19,700 students, of whom more than 6,200 are postgraduates. It is ranked as one of the world’s top 25 universities.

The University of Warwick Blog
Among UK universities, Warwick is a unique, and uniquely successful, institution. Despite its relative youth – it was founded in the mid-1960s – it is now one of the UK’s leading universities, with an acknowledged reputation for excellence in research and teaching, for innovation and for links with business and industry. In the last government Research Assessment Exercise, Warwick was rated fifth in the UK for research excellence; in the media league tables, it has consistently maintained its position in the Top Ten; applications for undergraduate places currently stand at around 30,000 for 3,000 undergraduate places, and over the last seven years we have built up from scratch a flourishing Medical School. Now, as we approach Warwick’s 50th birthday in 2015, our challenge is plain: how to focus activity and drive so as to attain greater international pre-eminence. National pre-eminence is no longer enough: we have set our sights on making Warwick a universally acknowledged world centre of higher education by 2015, firmly in the top 50 of world universities. To do so we need to reinvigorate that unique mixture of entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to absolute academic excellence that has served the University so well in the past and that is largely responsible for our success to date.

This strategy sets out ideas and principles, important priorities and some key activities that will occupy us in the next few years as we work towards our goal. It has been written after extensive consultation with members of the University – staff, students, alumni, lay members. We know from this consultation process that there is a real appetite for involvement, and for moving ahead quickly to realise our ambitions. So it is with the full support of the University community that we will move forward with this strategy and that, in itself, will be the greatest guarantee of its success.

Our Scottish University of the Year in 2006 and a winner of the UK University of the Year title back in 2002, this is the nearest a former winner of the UK title has come to repeating the trick.'

The Times Good University Guide

In the Times Good University Guide 2007 the University was named Scottish university of the year and attributed the award to the 'University's consistently outstanding teaching and research' combined with its success in the National Student Survey which measured student satisfaction with teaching and resources at their university. St Andrews students rated themselves as the top mainstream university in the UK (second only to the Open University).

In May 2007 St Andrews was named fourth best university in the UK and the 'big success story' of this year's Guardian University Guide. Its environmental credentials were also recognised in June 2007 when it was rated one of the greenest universities in the UK in the Times Higher Education Supplement 'green league' in joint top place in Scotland and joint eighth place in the UK. St Andrews was commended for its carbon emissions, recycling rates and energy consumed from renewable resources.

Teaching Quality

St Andrews has the highest accumulating Teaching Quality Assessment average rating in Scotland.

Research Assessment Exercise

The University of St Andrews has emerged as 14th in the UK and 2nd in Scotland for the quality of all its research across Science and the Arts according to the results of the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise published on 18 December 2008. The RAE 2008 has demonstrated that St Andrews has significantly expanded its complement of world class research since 2001. The University of St Andrews is in the Top 100 of the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking.

The Research Assessment Exercise 2001 saw St Andrews win the most consistently high set of ratings of any Scottish University.

University of Pennsylvania Blog
At the University of Pennsylvania, you'll find a historic, Ivy League school with highly selective admissions and a history of innovation in interdisciplinary education and scholarship. You'll also find a picturesque campus amidst a dynamic city and a world-class research institution.

Intellectual rigor and a practical outlook
Penn carries on the principles and spirit of its founder, Benjamin Franklin: entrepreneurship, innovation, invention, outreach, and a pragmatic love of knowledge. Franklin's practical outlook has remained a driving force in the university's development.

Top students
Today Penn is home to a diverse undergraduate student body of nearly 10,000, hailing from every state in the union and all around the globe. Admissions are among the most selective in the country and Penn consistently ranks among the top 10 universities in the annual U.S. News & World Report survey. Another 10,000 students are enrolled in Penn's 12 graduate and professional schools, which are national leaders in their fields. The Wharton School is consistently one of the nation's top three business schools. The School of Nursing is one of the two best in the U.S. The School of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Education, Law School, School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Annenberg School for Communication all rank among the top 10 schools in their fields.

A singular campus
With its green lawns and landmark architecture, our beautiful West Philadelphia campus houses all of Penn's activities, from student life, athletics, and academics to research, scholarship, and cultural life. All of Penn's 12 schools are located within walking distance of one another. This geographical unity, unique among Ivy League schools, supports and fosters Penn's interdisciplinary approach to education, scholarship, and research.

A vibrant city
Penn's picturesque campus is situated near the heart of Philadelphia, a vital and lively city. Our students and faculty enjoy both campus life and the expansive cultural offerings of the city. Penn makes a substantial investment in its surrounding neighborhood and offers ways for students and faculty to make community service part of their educational experience.

Crossing boundaries
True to our roots, Penn encourages both intellectual and practical pursuits. On our unified campus, this flexible mindset makes Penn a national leader in interdisciplinary programs, crossing traditional academic and professional boundaries to engage participants in the pursuit of new -- and useful -- knowledge. In addition to numerous cross-disciplinary majors and joint-degree programs, Penn is home to interdisciplinary institutions such as the Institute for Medicine and Engineering, the Joseph H. Lauder Institute for Management and International Studies, and the Management and Technology Program.

Powerful research
With 174 research centers and institutes, research is a substantial and esteemed enterprise at Penn. As of fiscal year 2006, the research community includes more than 4,200 faculty and 870 postdoctoral fellows, nearly 3,800 graduate students and 5,400 academic support staff and graduate assistants, and a research budget of $660 million. The scale and interdisciplinary character of our research activities make Penn a nationally-ranked research university.
Stanford Blog
Stanford is recognized as one of the world’s leading universities. Established more than a century ago by founders Jane and Leland Stanford, the university was designed, as clearly stated in the Founding Grant, to prepare students “for personal success and direct usefulness in life” and “promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization.” Today Stanford University remains dedicated to finding solutions to the great challenges of the day and to preparing our students to become the next generation of leaders.

Our students have opportunities to participate in a remarkable range of activities: from academic courses taught by renowned professors and opportunities for research, independent study and public service to an extraordinary breadth of extracurricular activities.

Multidisciplinary research and teaching are at the heart of recent university-wide initiatives on human health, the environment and sustainability, international affairs and the arts. These initiatives offer our faculty and students opportunities for collaboration across disciplines that will be key to future advances.

Our undergraduate students are an important part of these efforts. Stanford undergraduates have opportunities to study with faculty in small classes from their first days on campus, participate in study abroad or spend a quarter in Washington, D.C. Many students become involved in faculty research or develop their own projects and discover the excitement of being at the edge of a field and advancing the frontier of knowledge.

The pioneering spirit that inspired Jane and Leland Stanford to establish this university more than a century ago encourages boldness in everything we do — whether those efforts occur in the library, in the classroom, in a laboratory, in a theater or on an athletic field.

We hope that you, too, find your place at Stanford.

Yale University School of Nursing Blog
Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) is a diverse community of clinicians and scholars with a common goal: better health care for all people. We strive to achieve this goal through insightful research and expert care, both of which are informed by a model that empowers patients.

Founded in 1923, YSN became the first school within a university to prepare nurses under an educational rather than an apprenticeship program. Dean Annie Goodrich's insistence that her students came to Yale to learn a highly skilled profession rather than to provide extra hands to already trained nurses was truly revolutionary. The school continued to spawn new ideas that have helped redefine nursing: the groundbreaking research of Virginia Henderson, the founding of the American hospice movement by Dean Florence S. Wald, the advancement of clinical trials in nursing with leadership from Rhetaugh Dumas, and the first "graduate entry" system that enlivened nursing practice by attracting mature students with varied and rich life experiences.

Today YSN is ranked seventh among "America's Best Graduate Schools of Nursing" by the U.S. News and World Report, including Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty (first), Adult Medical-Surgical Clinical Specialists and Midwifery (third), Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric-Mental Health (fourth), and Adult Nurse Practitioner (fifth). The school also boasts a highly rated PhD in Nursing program and is ranked seventh among schools of nursing in receipt of NIH funds. Recent innovations include the launching of a master's program in Nursing Management, Policy and Leadership, and the Yale Center for International Nursing Scholarship and Education, which will build on YSN's rich tradition of international leadership and collaboration to address today's global health challenges. For YSN students, our recent achievements have provided further opportunities for collaboration with some of the top leaders in nursing and health care and will provide unique pathways to improving quality of life locally and around the world.

Cambridge University Blog
The University of Cambridge (informally Cambridge University, or simply Cambridge), located in the City of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, is the second oldest university in the English-speaking world and the fourth oldest in Europe. The name is sometimes abbreviated as Cantab. in post-nominals, a shortened form of Cantabrigiensis (an adjective derived from Cantabrigia, the Latinised form of Cambridge).

The university grew out of an association of scholars in the city of Cambridge that was formed, early records suggest, in 1209 by scholars leaving Oxford after a dispute with townsfolk there.[5] The universities of Oxford and Cambridge are often jointly referred to as "Oxbridge". In addition to cultural and practical associations as a historic part of British society, the two universities also have a long history of rivalry with each other.
